I got involved because it just made sense. The summit brought together leaders from many sectors to exchange ideas and work in partnerships. In San Francisco, we are particularly blessed by the vibrant and growing AAPI community that has enriched our city and proven what we have always known, that the beauty is in the mix. And I think that a lot of the things that have happened over the past ten years or whatever it is, more than ten years now, have changed the way that people perceive the Summit. That moment [was also important] because she needed the community to follow through, and check up with her because it was such a big thing for her to be holding on her shoulders. The AAPI community lacks the infrastructure or faces steep barriers to accessing government funding.
Occurring in a different city once every two years, it coalesces some of today's most celebrated APIA artists. The summit builds upon our Strong Women Healthy Family forums where community members came together in a shared learning environment for networking and collaboration. While the first film to feature a majority Asian and Asian American cast in a quarter of a century stole the show with its record-breaking performance at the box office, this past year saw AAPI achievement extend far beyond the silver screen. The conference offered an opportunity to highlight NEA, affiliate and caucus education efforts; address community concerns and get ideas on how to close the achievement gaps; improvecultural competence; foster diversity; and better engage the API community. We learned from each other that healthy families enabled communities to flourish and how to better support AAPI women and families. AAPI women face deportation and having their children removed if they report the abuse.
